Welcome to my redesign - okay, I'm kidding. This is a temporary "interval" theme. It didn't take too long. I am still redesigning but mean while, I'm putting this up. Why? I have some other projects I need to get stuck into, which reduces my time a little. I'd also like to contemplate my redesign a bit as I'm currently unsure about its direction. To understand more and the reasons behind my interval theme, read I haven't redesigned, but stay tuned!

Some news from the land of Nyssa

XP-PenI ordered myself a tablet last weekend and I got it on Friday. I wasn’t sure if it would be very good since it’s not a “good” one but I have been pleasantly surprised with it. Previous to buying it, I couldn’t find a lot of examples done with the same tablet but I’m glad I got it. At first I wasn’t, as recently I’ve had an eye examination and ended up having to fork out $300 dollars for glasses (why? More on that at “No Job for Nyssa!”) so I wasn’t happy that I so stupidly spent money when it wasn’t needed (as people know, I’m saving to go back to England next year).

At first, I couldn’t use it and my drawings weren’t actually drawings but more like a 4 year olds scribble. But after using it for a day, I can happily say I’ve been picking it up quite well and can draw quite fine with it. I’m currently working on a wallpaper with it and I’ve already used it in my redesign (just some handwritten text). I’m hoping with enough practice my drawing skills will pick up and return to what they used to be and I’ll be able to apply some of those skills in my web designs.

So, what is the tablet? It’s just a Deleter / P-Active XP-Pen, quite small but don’t really need anything bigger at the moment. There are a few specs below. As I said, nothing special but good enough for what I want to do with it.

  • Dimensions: 237mm (L) x 233mm (W) x 23mm (H)
  • Active Area: 5.50″ x 4.00″
  • Resolution: 1000LPI
  • Pressure Sensitivity: 1024 levels
  • Report Rate: At least 100 points/sec
  • Technology: Electromagnetic

I’m happy with it. Its recommended retail price is something near $150 but I managed to get it for $70 (brand new) so that wasn’t bad at all. Would I recommend it? Well, sure, why not? It works well, the quality is quite good and it’s a nice little tablet for someone just starting out on tablet graphics (like myself).

In other news, my redesign is coming along finally! I’ll hope to start coding it up soon and have everything ready by new years day. Also, I’ve seen some pretty cool modifications of my PocketT theme, but I’ll write about that next time.

    It looks great and I hope it works out for you, but the question I want to know is:
    Does a tablet really improve your designs? Would it help with web design? Or is it just something to have that might improve little subtle design elements?

    Good question, Brian. I didn’t buy the tablet for web design though, so it probably won’t be used a lot for that purpose (I primarily got it just to have something to draw straight to screen with).

    It would truly depend on the type of web design, which in the end depends on the website itself. It would only be useful for graphic elements that need to be drawn (and then, it would depend on the illustration or image being drawn anyway) and to help improve subtle design elements.

    But this of course depends on the person using it and the purpose they’d use it for.

    No problem. And to be honest, you probably wouldn’t need it unless you wanted have some kind of drawing placed into a web design and even then, you can use a mouse and Photoshop and/or Illustrator! :)

    I will be sharing some drawings in the future, once I have my redesign launched (and I’ve used the tablet for some elements in my redesign too). And of course, after a little more practice ;)

    In the UK, I knew where and how to find the best deals, but, I haven’t a clue here in Australia.

    Also, I’ve noticed the Aussie ebay is a lot quieter, and less competitive than the UK’s.

    There are a few sites around for Australia, but Deals Direct is about the only one I’ve really had any dealings with.

    And you’re quite right. eBay Australia is much quieter!
