Welcome to my redesign - okay, I'm kidding. This is a temporary "interval" theme. It didn't take too long. I am still redesigning but mean while, I'm putting this up. Why? I have some other projects I need to get stuck into, which reduces my time a little. I'd also like to contemplate my redesign a bit as I'm currently unsure about its direction. To understand more and the reasons behind my interval theme, read I haven't redesigned, but stay tuned!

Investing time into WordPress themes

I’m investing a lot of time into WordPress themes over the next 2 months, so I can have plenty of themes on the Downloads page for the new year (when I launch my redesign!). But spending time on creating themes means I could be losing money. How do I rectify this situation? By providing a variety of different themes to download.

It’s a matter of choosing the right path that will actually benefit myself and others. I will have free themes and always will. I know this much. But I also want to make some money on the themes I will be creating. One I am working on at the moment I’m not ready to release as a free theme, but it leaves me with a difficult decision. Do I make these few themes available as a pay-per-download type system or allow people to buy them outright?

I suppose there are pros and cons for both of these methods and I suppose the question would have to be asked, who would pay to download something? And are people more likely to buy something when it’s cheaper, though still available to others or are they more likely to pay a more reasonable (yet still affordable) price for something only they will ever have?

I know I would personally do both, but I’m obviously not everyone. This is where you come in and offer any thoughts you might have, or experiences if you hav had any in this situation (providing premium themes).

Wasn’t Matt of Wordpress thinking about starting a pay-for theme database?

Anyhoo, I don’t have a problem with bought themes. You should look at how much you get from donations and see what people are willing to give, then work out a price from that. Single user rights themes would be different, though, and people would be more willing to pay for that.

    Do both :)

Yeah, I’ve read a few things about it, though I’m not 100% sure on my stance on it yet. It’s a good idea though.

As for donations, it’s hard to come up with something from that as I’ve only ever received one donation and that wasn’t even for a WordPress theme itself lol

Hello Nyssy… you know how much i love your work, and you also know i don’t comment around here too often, but im sure you know i read you on a very regular basis. With that being said i think this particular post is a good opportunity to remind you of how much i love your work, you are an eternal source of inspiration and you are really creative and may i say, extremely well organized. Every single update i see in your themes has always been for the better.

I am in love with this theme, this is pretty much how i would like my blog to look like, but since i have no idea on how to css or php i just get help and do the “design/image” for myself.

I dont know if this helps on your wondering but if i saw, lets say, this particular theme that you have now, for sale, and it wasnt really expensive, i would deffo buy it. But for example, you have some free themes for download, i see them and they`re no different (in my opinion) to the ones already available for download for free in the WP themes database, so i wouldnt spend my money on them.

I have no idea if im making myself clear hahahaha, but i hope you get a little bit of the point :)
With that being said, i love your work, and im really looking forward on what you come up with next time. If i had 100 AUD i would buy it :D.

Hey Faridee, it’s good to see you comment! ;) I know you read and that’s fine by me. As long as someone is reading, I’m more than happy. =D

And thank you for such an in depth comment. It all made perfect sense to me and definitely helps with my decision making!

Keep your eyes peeled for the next design. It’s completely different from this one. =)

Nyssa, I say go for Premium Themes! :) I’ve found that there’s massive gaps in this market and people are willing to pay $50 - $100 for quality themes, that’ll give them more exclusivity.

My Premium News Theme has been selling very well indeed, which means that for the past week, I’ve earned a nice steady flow of passive incomce, without having to put any more work into it (except of course all the support / customization e-mails)… Essentially I’m saying - GO FOR IT! :) You’re definitely good enough and you know WP well, so you’ll be an instant hit.

A good idea is perhaps to start out with Unique Blog Designs and then take things from there.

Was hoping you’d drop a comment here, Adii. ;) Though your comment wasn’t showing properly because of the links. I’ll have to see to that later on.

Anyway, thanks for the input! It helps a lot, especially since you’re talking from experience there.
