A common problem for designers
As funny as it is, I’ve come across quite a few designers who just can’t stop redesigning. I thought I was alone in being one of those people that constantly change their design. Unfortunately, I’m facing that problem once again. As my design skills improve (alongside coding skills), I keep wanting to change my design.
I recently started a new design for a WordPress theme that I was going to release. With the kind advice of Zeta, I added an abstract illustration into the header and now I’m in love with it. So, I’m facing a problem. I’ve had my current design for about a month and of course I like it. But I love this new design even more. I feel it showcases more of what I’m capable of (other forms of art, like simple illustration).
So what do I do? Do I continue working on the design, code it and use it (probably won’t be ready for about a month or so)? Or do I keep this one and feel sad that I’m not using this other, better design? Any advice would be great. Why should or shouldn’t I?
Sigh.
*raises hands* ….. I know what you mean.. :) I keep getting these new Ideas that I want to implement but my design is barely 3 months old
Well, I’m glad you’re the same, thats for sure. ;)
I guess the hardest part is deciding whether it should be done or not.
I know how you feel! akamike is about two/three months old now and I am fighting the urge to make a new design for it. It’s appearing in a magazine (.net) next month as well, so I can’t change it or else I might botch that up.
Instead, I am taking the ideas I have and putting them into other themes that I want to make. When I have a bit more time that is :)
I feel your pain Nyssa… As you know I just released my new design after tinkering with it for almost a month in the strive to something that resembles perfection (in mu mind).
To however bypass your problem, I’ve labelled my redesign as Version 1.0, which means I’m “allowed” to tinker as much as I want in the future and just add numbers to the version ie. Version 1.1.0.1.c :)
Change as you feel Nyssa, i love seeing your new designs :P and as you say, it better reflects your talents.
@Mike: Ooh, .net mag eh? Nice one. :)
@Adii: Indeed, I do like the new design! :) As for the versions, this one is v5… so I guess the next will be v6, simply because it will be completely different from this one.
@Kym: lol You’re the one that usually picks on me cause I change all the time. :P But thanks for the input :D
Change Nyssa! Change! (not that I don’t like this one)
@Pixeltoko: I will be changing (not tomorrow though :P). I noticed you change your blog theme quite often… or is that me imagining things? ;)
You are SO right!
I will try to stick with this one…it’s so hard…
I guess I’m a theme freak! . . . easy . . .easy . . .
Ok . . . I’ll stay with this one . . for now… :D
I know :P but i really do love seeing each new design you bring out *giggles*
@Pixeltoko: lol theme freak :P Well, there are many nice themes out there… that doesn’t help at all.
@Kym: Well, I guess you shall see what comes next ;)
Amen to that! I know the feeling. You get new skills and ideas but can’t find anywhere to use them so you end up just putting them into a whole new site. My websites been live five months and its had 3 designs (2 redesigns)!
Great site btw.
@Harry: Exactly what I mean! It’s okay when you have a test blog/site somewhere but it’s not as good as actually being able to test your skills out on the public. ;)
And thank you. I checked out your site. Quite like it and it does remind me a little of my upcoming redesign (the green and grey, which are just two of the colours in my redesign).
Thanks for stopping by. :)
