nyssabrowndesign

Welcome to my redesign - okay, I'm kidding. This is a temporary "interval" theme. It didn't take too long. I am still redesigning but mean while, I'm putting this up. Why? I have some other projects I need to get stuck into, which reduces my time a little. I'd also like to contemplate my redesign a bit as I'm currently unsure about its direction. To understand more and the reasons behind my interval theme, read I haven't redesigned, but stay tuned!

Redesigned and Reformatted

After quite a few days of being offline, nyssajbrown.net is finally back with a complete redesign. Yes, another one. I’ve got rid of the pink completely, for reasons I’m not sure of myself. It was driving me up the wall, it was just too much, I think. Still no sidebar, just a simple bottom area with a couple of things to make navigating the blog elements of my site a little easier, and I’ve added some links down there, etc.

There were a few issues I came across with this theme and I’m sure a few of you can imagine they weren’t Firefox issues but Internet Explorer issues. Internet Explorer 7 issues, at that. After two days of frustration, I figured out one issue, and it was as simple as removing an entire div class. My second issue was the layout with the images, but it was just me being silly really. Always remember to include the height and width in the img tag, cause it could break your layout! They’re the only real issues I had, besides some margin problems with Internet Explorer. I shouldn’t have been surprised.

The front page is now completely different from what I had previously, using a bit of code and a plugin to get the formatting I wanted. Perhaps I’ll write a more thorough post about that sometime in the future. There are still a few things I need to redo, like a few images and add something else to the bottom area, but that’s here nor there and it will get done. The most important thing is that I’ve finally deactivated that maintenance mode plugin.

Now here comes the fun part. Finding out any other issues in other browsers and operating systems. Take a look around and please let me know if you come across problems. I’d be extremely grateful.

    Yeah really nice :-)

Do you mind sharing where you got all the little icons from? Or are those a custom thing?

    Thanks :)

Looks like a pretty cool layout! Looks pretty well in Firefox, and in IE (I think version 6?) It all seems to be working pretty good. The layout looks amazing, although the white against the light green is somewhat hard to read. Either way, it looks great! :D

    Joey: Thanks :)

Carvetia: The icons are from famfamfam.com. They’re free too ;)

Carla: Thanks for the tip, I’ll change that to something darker probably. Glad you like it otherwise :D

..hi i just dropped in from dART (icemother) and this looks great….discovered you were a fellow Australian.. my daughter (icequeen) living in Mexico on Rotary exchange, will probably move to Brisbane next year.. I love Brisbane..
.. anyway I cannot compare this to your previous design.. it is very well done I think.. if you are after “advanced critique” and coming from and advertising background.. the only thing I could say about this new design is that a couple of visuals or images might help.. they help to hook people in.. I’m hoping to build a site and learn all these things so I’ve faved this and will be back for a good look. Thank you for your good will.. I appreciate it.

    Yours sinscerely. Liz and ciao

Liz: Thanks for stopping by. Brisbane is quite nice. Relaxing city, really. As for a few more visuals… well, since I’m not really advertising anything, I don’t think it would be a good idea. I do have images on pages where they need to be, though in my blog, it’s definitely more about written content and design (web design at that). Too many images isn’t always a good thing, especially when trying to pull people into my blog, where it’s 95% of the time about the content rather than the visuals. But I guess a small image per post wouldn’t hurt. :)

It’s good looking, but what I’ve noticed is a bit hard to read some areas. Other than that, I believe that this is an awesome look, and I’m also glad you used wordpress 2.1 ;)

Solitude12: Yeah, someone said that before about the white on green. It looks okay to me but I understand everybodies monitor displays it differently, so I’ll have to change that. Not sure what else is hard to read though. Glad you like it besides, though. ;)

Hey Nyssa!!! As time goes by i feel more and more lucky to have found your site, believe me, your work is always a source of inspiration XD I’m a geographer, neither a designer nor i work with codes, so for me having a blog and trying to learn stuff of how it works, CSS, PHPs, etc… at the beginning was like chinese to me.

Soooo, it’s great to see that you keep improving, i love the new desing, its totally adorable, love the color combo & it’s classy minimalism, you rock !!!
BTW, how on earth do you install those little flags in comments? is that CSS or a plugin?

    Muchos besos from Mexico

Faridee: I’m glad my work inspires you :) Geographer hey? That’s cool. I wanted to go down that path or something similar-ish, but life gets in the way sometimes.

Soon I’ll have some articles which will probably be useful to you, too. As for the flags, it’s a part of a plugin I’m using, Firestats, which tracks unique visitors and page views, etc, and has the option to display country flags in comments (along with some other things).

Wow, you go away for a couple of days and find a beautiful redesign on your return!

This is lovely Nyssa, I love the comments section and who needs a sidebar when you’ve got a big footer! I like the front page too! Very inventive.

Finally, thanks for the link at the bottom!

Looks good but the thing where you have the comments looks awfully a lot like Veerle’s blog even if you are using different align on the column and it made a lot more rougher.. Maybe you would benefit from making it a bit smoother than it current state?

Just ideas! From what I’ve seen you are also using some low contrasting colors against eachother (White on bright olivegreen as background for white ain’t working so good for example and neither do the colors worked in the reversed way :-/) This is all just my point of view of course and my laptop might display the colors a bit wrong but still, use colors that contrast good towards eachother :-)

    Good work though!

Ps. Just noticed, if you want to work with site sections you might want to switch color of each “part” of the blog, as for using some different special colors for each major section?

Alexander, thanks for the comment. Not sure what you mean by the comments thing, though. Sorry. Maybe you could explain a little more, as I can’t see how my comments look like the comments in that blog.

As for the colours, I do agree. The white on green is hard to read, and green on white. A few people have mentioned it and I’ll be changing that eventually. Just have other projects on my plate at the moment. They look alright on this monitor, but as you pointed out, your display (and others) probably look different.

Not sure about the site sections thing you’re talking about either. Sorry. Do you mean the individual pages (Design, Downloads etc?),

Haha, sorry to be so blurry! Well, concerning the similarities I think I got the “ticket”-look similarities more than the actual design (Her comments-counters that look like tickets and your overall look reminds me of these straps you get when they rip them apart or something like it.. Am not sure how to explain it better)…

And for the colored sections of the site, I was thinking of the menu (The hover effect on the “tabs”) to switch color depending on what sections you had in mind since you seem to have some color variation for different sections on a page… Hope I got a bit more clear this time :-)

Ahh that is a lot more clearer, thanks for explaining.
I guess I can see what you mean now, though it wasn’t meant to look that way. I may consider changing it in that case.

And I quite like that idea about the different coloured tabs. I may just change that sometime in the near future.
